Just spent an hour with wilbara on his allotment and if an old Outsider is allowed to give his opinion I Would like to say that the site is a credit to the people who work On it. There is obviously a lot of pride and enjoyment gone into the site In recent years and it shows in the plots. So much so that the very few plots that are not getting the same Love and attention stand out even more than they did of old. Get rid of them and the council would have a site they could be Proud Of. I have seen and been on a lot of sites in my life and believe me You have one of the best.

Yes, thank you very much bridgey. Everyone works in their own way, and to their own ideas of what makes a good allotment, and there is no standard template for success but it is very rewarding to hear praise from those like you and wilbarra who have spent their lives gardening. I think we have a great community here at America Lane and we are proud of it.

when one enters an allotment site now days and sees people of both sexes, some with children,it is strange to think that not so many years ago that would not have been the case. Even thirty years ago allotments were places where it was very much male dominated and the thought of a young couple bringing their children down on a site filled some plot holders with shock and horror. the reincarnation of adolf hitler appearing at the gate would have been preferable to some ,than the sight of a young mum with her two children working on a plot. Having had my first real introduction into the allotment scene at the early stages of the second world war, where it was mainly women with their children, along with the older men who were too old to be called up into one of the armed services, that did the work on the allotments,i always thought it strange that this attitude of a men only preserve exited among some men. This attitude did not just exist with the plot holders it was well known that in some parts of the country you just didnt get a plot if you were a young female with children. On the other side of the coin a lot of parents did not help their cause when some parents would consider that a site was a glorified childrens playground and would let their little dears run all over the plots and would get most irate if they were told off. Thank goodness their is a much more enlighten attitude, on both sides of the fence, now. That is why their is now a sense of community on a lot of sites all over the country and long may it continue.
