So I know we are not having any competitions at the BBQ this time round - but here's my entry into the early season weird veggies to get us started!! A Siamese courgette!! Anyone else?

Cheating because this was a crop from last year, but the sizeable red and white root crop was a kind of beetroot which I discovered too late was principally used for cattle food. The label on the seed packet, bought in Funchal market in Madeira, promised a lage, rich red "betteraba forageira". Betteraba I could work out as beetroot, but only after sowing the crop and watching it rise out of the ground steadily like some malign creature thrusting towards the light did I look up forrageira and find it meant fodder. Slightly too late as I'd given the first, approximately 2 kg. fruit to a plot neighbour to try. He reported that it was a bit watery and mashy but basically alright. I was not so brave and after digging up these monsters consigned them to rot down,
