From some distant galaxy they came, and clustered amongst the foliage on an allotment plot. Purple kohl rabi - delicious as a salad vegetable thinly sliced or grated, or cooked in a gratin. And very, very easy to grow.

Nice. Practically show veg. I've never managed to grow it very well. But then I wasn't that taken on eating it so I've not tried too hard. It might he me but when I read a packet and it says easy to grow I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to. I seem to have the most trouble with the 'easy to grow' bunch.

High praise from a professional gardener! BBC Good Food describes the taste as "somewhere between a turnip and a waterchestnut, with a crisp, crunchy texture" I would go much more for the turnip myself, but then I like crunchy salads. For any who may be interested this US site www.thekitchn.com/top-five-ways-to-prepare-kohlr-60321 has several good recipes for cooking kohl rabi, which seems to be much better known there than here.

it does seem that khol rabi never really took on in this country as a look at most of the old gardening books the growing of it is usually shoved under such headings as miscellaneous vegetables or unusual vegetables. after looking at murrays khol rabi and my attempts at growing them, while not being of a jealous nature could i not suggest to you murray that a dose verdone weedkiller would benefit your plants next year. like stuart i have never had much success with them but i am going to keep trying. p.s. i am jealous really but one has to say they are not dosent one

Wonderful colour aren't they and congratulations! I have never grown them but was given some a couple of years back by John and Sue on plot next to me at that time - have to say I didn't go for the taste .... 😏
