Remarkable results: as of this morning two long-unattended plots have miraculously been cleared of weeds, at least partially, and in one case replanted. Whether by coincidence or because word had spread the result is those plotholders have got, for now at least, the message that they should look after the land that they rent because there are plenty of others who would love the opportunity to take it on. The next challenge for all of us is to get across the deeper message that working one's plot shouldn't just be spurred by the threat of an inspection, it should be something that is done regularly. Not everyone can find the time to visit the site every day, and sometimes it is hard for working people with families even to do so at weekends, but it is a responsibility like others in life that has to be faced up to and the time found. The results are so very much worthwhile: pride in what has been achieved, healthy food and exercise - sometimes too much! - and a great social activity.

FOLLOWING ON FROM WHAT MURRAY SAID I AGREE THAT PEOPLE SHOULD THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE THEY TAKE ON A PLOT. DO THEY HAVE THE TIME MUST BE THEIR FIRST AND FOREMOST CONSIDERATION. DO THEY HAVE THE ENTHUSIASM TO CARRY ON WITH IT AFTER THE FIRST INITIAL BURST OF ENERGY EVAPORATES, AS IT WILL. TAKING ON A PLOT MUST NOT BE JUST A WHIM TAKEN WHILE SITTING IN THE ARMCHAIR WITH A PINT OF LAGER IN YOUR HAND WATCHING A CERTAIN SO CALLED T.V GARDENING EXPERT TELLING YOU THAT IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO. DONT BE PUT OFF TAKING A PLOT BECAUSE YOU DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT GARDENING IF YOU ARE REALLY KEEN YOU WILL SOON PICK IT UP. DONT BE WORRIED BY THE THOUGHT THAT YOUR PLOT WONT LOOK SO GOOD AS THE PLOTS TOILED BY PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN GARDENING FOR YEARS. YOUR OWN SATISFACTION IN WHAT YOU DO IS WHAT COUNTS AND SURPRISINGLY, PRIDE IN YOUR PLOT DOES SHOW THROUGH NO MATTER WHAT THE STANDARD. IF THERE ARE TIMES WHEN YOU ARE UNABLE TO DO YOUR PLOT THROUGH ILLNESS OR SUCH THEN LET SOMEONE KNOW. YOU WILL FIND THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ON THE SITE THAT WILL HELP OUT IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. MURRAY SAID QUITE RIGHTLY THAT KEEPING YOU PLOT IN GOOD SHAPE SHOULD NOT BE SPURRED ON BY THE THREAT OF AN INSPECTION BUT IN TODAYS SOCIETY THERE IS AN ELEMENT IN PEOPLES THINKING IN WHICH THEIR RIGHTS ALWAYS COME BEFORE THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES. THERE IS THIS ELEMENT,I AM AFRAID, IN SOME PEOPLES THINKING WHEN THEY TAKE UP AN ALLOTMENT.
