Does anyone have comfrey growing on their plot who wouldn't mind digging me up a piece to start it off on my plot? I'd like to get some growing so I can make my own feed.

charlie on the bottom plot used to have some dont know whether he still has. i was told once that it was good for killing blackfly on broad beans didnt find it did much good. was then told i should have used my own urine and plunged the comfrey in a bucket of that before spraying the mixture onto the broad beans. didnt fancy that.

Thanks, I'll ask him next time I see him. I'll pass on the urine suggestion though, it is hard enough to get the kids to eat my veg as it is. That would give them the excuse they need.

Soapy water does the trick as well as most things for that. Stuart: also have a word with Gareth, who makes up some very evil-smelling but wonderfully fertilising concoctions; he may have some.

the soapy water idea has its limitations but is always worth a try. i have found that pinching the tops out early and then inspect regularly and when the blackfly start taking an interest i always take the advice i was once given by a retired gardener who worked under the great fred streeter at petworth which was: when the blackfly first appears just before dark get a fist full of soil and just sprinkle over the top of each plant it works for me . although i use sharp sand instead of soil.

Spoke to Charlie who was very happy to donate some comfrey clumps. Now migrated and rehomed on plot 5. I'm looking forward to free comfrey feed now for years to come.
