PICKED THE LAST OF THE RASPBERRIES TODAY AND PUT IN THE FREEZER. I CANT RECALL A BETTER YEAR THAN THIS FOR RASPBERRIES. BUT IF THE FRUIT, GROWING ON THE TREES, ON THE AMERICA LANE SITE IS ANYTHING TO GO BY IT SEEMS ITS A PRETTY GOOD YEAR ALL ROUND FOR FRUIT OF ALL KINDS. I THOUGHT I HAD GROWN SOME REALLY PRIZE WINNING RASPBERRIES THIS YEAR UNTIL I WENT TO THE HAYWARDS HEATH SHOW A COUPLE OF WEEKS BACK AND SAW THE RASPBERRIES THAT ROY HAYWARD, FROM THE OATALL ALLOTMENT SITE HAD,GROWN. SAME WITH MY DAHLIAS. THOUGHT THEY WERE PRETTY GOOD UNTIL I SAW MICK FIGGS DAHLIAS STANDING PROUDLY IN VASES ON THE SHOW BENCH AT THE SAME SHOW. AH WELL BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD! BUT ALL IN ALL A PRETTY GOOD YEAR FOR BOTH FRUIT AND FLOWERS.
P.S. JOHN AND SUE CULLEN HAVE GOT SOME PRETTY GOOD DAHLIAS GROWING IN THEIR BACK GARDEN.

Right so I'm late to the party. Turns out earning a living as a gardener makes you busy during the summer. Who would have thought it. Anyway went down the plot today, pulled a lot of weeds, but in between noticed the old Ryder Blue were just about ready to harvest some seed. Maybe the trick is to wait until the Ryder cup? Anyway I took the dry pods and have shelled the beans and have a plate full on the windowsill now. I was going to let them air for a day or so then put them in a paper bag and a dark place until spring. Does that sound like a good plan or should I be doing something else with them?

Welcome back to the forum Stuart. You've been much missed, and I hope your new career is working well for you.
I will not be presumptuous about preserving the Ryder's Blue, except to say that I have a similar quantity and have carefully dried them and now put them into two separate air-tight jars, one to act as a control over the other, since I heard Wilbarra's tale of the fly that got in. I don't know if the discoloured beans in your photo are damaged at all, but just to be sure I have discarded all those that don't conform to an oatmeal-coloured consistency - harsh eugenicist that I am!
Hope to see you again on the plot, and to have your excellent contributions here, time permitting.

Thanks and I'll do some sorting. I have about the same still to harvest on the plot when they are ready so will have more than enough for next year.

THE FIRST OF THE BRUSSELS ARE NOW SAFELY STORED IN THE FREEZER THERE WERE JUST UNDER TWO POUND TO STORE AFTER THEY HAD BEEN PREPARED. BECAUSE OF THE TROUBLE WITH CLUB ROOT I GROW A CLUB ROOT RESISTANT VARIETY CALLED CRISPUS AND HAVE BEEN QUITE SUCCESSFUL WITH IT. THEY WERE VERY SLOW IN GETTING AWAY THIS YEAR BUT SEEM TO BE DOING ALRIGHT NOW. I ALSO DUG UP A FEW PARSNIPS AND WAS WELL PLEASED WITH THE SIZE AND QUALITY. I KNOW THE TRADITION IS TO WAIT UNTIL THE FROST GETS ON THEM BUT I HAVE FOUND THAT THEY TASTE SWEET WITHOUT THE FROST. ANY RATE IT WILL BE PARSNIP CHIPS TONIGHT.

Thought i had picked the last of the raspberries but was wrong picked another bowl on Friday and these are now safely in the freezer . This is definately the last picking for the year as in the next week or so I will be cutting the canes right back and moving them onto my other plot. The wonderful crop i have had this year is nothing to do with me as everybody else seems to have had the same results this year. As was proved at local shows . This year fruit that would have got a first or second in normal years didnt come any where. As a result the freezer this year is well stocked with fruit of all kinds. I also have another four pound of Brussels all stacked away in there as well. They started to form late this year and at one stage i was tempted to pull them up as they looked as if they were not going to do anything but they have come on in leaps and bounds in the last six weeks

Sounds like my sprouts are behind yours but I do at last seem to be getting some size to them. I gave them a bit of an extra feed a few weeks ago which might have something to do with it. The bed was one of those I put the green manure on and dug in before planting. And it has had plenty of manure over the last few years so I was thinking it would be fairly rich. I've forgotten which variety of sprouts I planted so no idea if they were an early or late cropper.
