Just a heads up that there is a leak to the pipe in the toilet by the gates when the loo is flushed. It has been reported to Town Hall and will update when repairs are done.

Please note work to rectify the issues with the toilets at America Lane will start either this Friday or early next week and will take approximately 2 days to complete. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may be causing but we have been working on getting this fixed as soon as possible.

Many thanks Maria, this news will be much appreciated by the plotholders at America Lane. I will move these posts to join the thread already started on the A.L. board.

just two quick comments. (1) the reason for the blockage is,evidently, tree roots. (2)a plot holder brought this conclusion to the attention of the town hall as far back as 1997. so as a rate payer, as well as a plot holder, i wonder how much money would have been saved if the town hall had listened and acted on his advice.

An update on the toilet repairs. The problem with the pipework was more extensive than thought at first, involving the connection of conduits flowing at different levels, so more work has to be undertaken, and at considerable expense. The good news is that the toilet will be usable still while the work takes place, which will be in the week beginning 13th March and will probably take most of the week to complete. Thanks to the Town Council for seeing this through for us. It's a very basic amenity and one very much appreciated.

I've renamed this thread, because as we know there is no longer a leak and a lot of very expensive work has been done by contractors to the Town Council and by Souther Water to maintain this facility. We are fortunate to have a toilet on this site - none of the others in Haywards Heath do, either council or association-run - and it was staggering to hear at the last Allotment Holders meeting that the repair bills had exceeded £7000! That is just over twice the budgeted income from allotment rents for the whole year.
Whilst thanking the Town Council for taking on this expense and maintaining a very useful asset, can I suggest that all of us do our bit to show appreciation for what we have by keeping it clean and fresh after use, and by helping to provide soap or paper when they have run out?

Many thanks to Neal who has kept the toilet clean and well-stocked. We're lucky to have a proper toilet on our site and even luckier to have responsible folk like Neal to look after it. Somehow during the storms we lost the loo brush but yesterday we provided a new brush and holder.

A new LOO plea to everyone.....
We are SO lucky to have a loo and washbasin on our allotment site. Not many allotments have that facility. There are one or two people who regularly donate supplies of loo rolls and soaps and recently hand sanitisers etc etc..... (and a HUGE thank you goes out to Neal who regularly cleans the loo and provides supplies.....)
Can everyone keep it in their minds to occasionally check on the loo and bring down some supplies.... this would be very welcome and spread the load wider...
Perhaps someone might even be able to put up a shelf above the loo where we could store supplies.. that would be marvellous.
We are so lucky to have this facility and I am sure ALL of us have used the "little room" at one time or another......
So thank you in advance - your contributions will be much appreciated.

Further to my post above a year ago, I was at the allotment today and visited the loo to find it had been left in a fairly disgusting condition. Not only was the loo dirty but a loo roll had been dropped into the loo and then left on the back of the cistern soaking wet - useless for anyone to use. The loo brush was broken and left discarded on the floor along with other rubbish.
So I cleaned it all up and removed the rubbish. Not a pleasant task.
I regularly donate loo rolls and soap and I know one or two others do as well. I have bought a new loo brush (99p …. Not a fortune!) and will take down tomorrow. Currently there are no loo rolls there.
Please please please can we all share the responsibility for this amazing asset we have. We do not employ cleaners - we are all responsible for the upkeep and stocking of the loo with loo rolls etc etc. Is there someone handy who could perhaps put up a loo roll holder to stop droppage of loo rolls into the loo?
But mainly - If you make a mess - please clear it up - don’t leave it for someone else to do for you.
Thanks Jane

A very quick and generous response to Jan's post. Nick Monk has put up a sturdy shelf and Neal will be keeping an eye out to make sure it is clean and tidy. Thanks very much to them both and to all the others who keep it well-stocked. It is a unique asset and very much needed.

We're lucky to have this loo on site: the only allotment in Haywards Heath that has its own comfort station! Please treat it as your own, and if you see that loo paper or other resources are running out, replace it as soon as possible. We're grateful to Neal, who looks after keeping it clean and tify but he shouldn't have to pay for all the basics.
