December is not a busy time for gardeners. We tend to do more cerebral things than practical this month, looking out old packets of seeds, reading through seed catalogues, digging out old diaries and planting charts. Some of us call it planning; others more realistic perhaps call it daydreaming. We are united in wanting to get away from the dark and the indoors, impatient for the new year to begin and the chance to feel soil under foot, to watch for shoots to start appearing in pots or prepared beds.
That time will come but now it is almost Christmas and a good time to congratulate ourselves here on this forum and in Haywards Heath on what we have achieved. A good second half of the summer running into a long, hot and dry September produced record yields of fruits, good root crops and beans. At America Lane we held our first, very successful barbeque and had great weather and excellent company.
Here on the forum after 15 months we are nudging 60, 000 page views and have had over 650 posts from a wide spectrum of our 45 members. We have viewers and contributors from plots in other boroughs and we welcome more contributions, because it is by talking to others and learning from them that we become better at the things we enjoy. An encouraging sign of our success here is that the Town Council will shortly be launching a new Sports Forum using this one as a model. Good luck to all you sporty types and perhaps we will lend you wilbarra to lace up his old football boots and show you some aggressive defensive play!
We have had two very well-attended Allotment holders meetings, engaging with the Council on a great number of topics, and this has borne fruit with the development and adoption of our new Allotments Policy and Tenancy Agreement. Letters to new tenants offering practical help and suggestions on plot management and standards, which have been put together by some of our most experienced and knowledgeable plotholders, have been adopted and the Council will be publishing the templates on this site shortly. The new inspection regime has been successful in giving clear indications to tenants when standards are slipping and the Council will also be publishing figures of plot turnover and waiting lists.
A very happy Christmas and a prosperous and hopeful new year to all those on this forum and on the allotment sites in our town, to those who worked on the America Lane Plotholders Committee, and to Councillor Jeffers and the members of his committee for all their support, and not least to the Town Clerk, to Helen and her new colleague Maria, and to the Grounds team.
