Please note that maintenance work to clear the drainage ditch adjacent to the America Lane houses will commence on Monday 23rd January 2017. Good luck to the Grounds Team who were on site in freezing, foggy conditions at 10 this morning. It seems they are only clearing back weeds and brambles at this time, so it should not be too long for them to spend in the cold.

Visited the plot this morning and was surprised to see that there has been no activity on the drainage channel itself, neither deeper nor wider, and beyond a small amount of hedging cutback on the house side of the ditch there has been no clearance of any of the brambles or nettles or scrub that fills up the ditch. In fact the only thing that seems to have happened, apart from some of the detritus cut away being left to form dams in the ditch itself, is that the team have very helpfully cleared away from the compost bins on my plot the hazel branches I had cut in the autumn that I was leaving till the spring when I would be using them as pea and bean sticks! I hope that the Management Plan that the Town Council will be delivering for the plot will detail when the rest of this work will be done? I note that the Council will be voting on Monday night for the 2017/18 budget including a 10% increase in allotment rents. That isn't excessive in itself, but we should expect the Council to tell us what sort of value it will deliver, and what the timescale is for this.

A follow up. I visited again yesterday and was very pleased that work has recommenced and the brambles and scrub are all being cleared, the hedging plants on the house side being cut back, and I am told the banking will be redefined, especially at the point where it is narrowest. Good to see this response from the Council and I hope that the work goes well.
As a note to all America Lane tenants the grounds team have cleared a lot of rubbish from the ditch already, not just branches and vegetation but all manner of old iron and dangerous rubbish like glass. They will be bringing in a skip to clear this away this week but it is NOT for general use by plotholders. We agreed in the new Allotments Policy to clear away our own rubbish and this is a one-time action to keep the ditch clear and free of obstacles.

the council ground staff have finally finished doing the hedge and ditch on the america lane site an d i for one would like to congratulate them on the good job they have made of it. it has taken a lot of hard work and two skips full of rubbish that they had to drag out of the hedge before they could get going on the hedge and ditch. rubbish that had been dumped by previous tenants and the house holders that live in the houses adjoining the sites. i would say that the town hall should wipe the slate clean on the matter of dumping of this rubbish but from now on be very active and strict in their dealings on the matter not only on the america lane allotment tenants but the house holders as well. when someone gives up their plot there should be be an inspection of the plot and if there is rubbish left on the plot then the tenant must be made to clear the plot or be charged for doing so. on another subject when are the council going to get around to measuring the plots as was agreed by them. on the one hand they say that there is a need to put the rents up annually for the next five years then on the other they lose hundreds of pounds by not charging the correct rent for the amount of ground that tenants have. i know of one plot that is booked as five rod but is in fact eight rod. my own plot is booked in at five rod is in fact seven rod and a lot of the two and a half rod are some of the largest two and a half rod plots you will see anywhere. there i have had my moan or moans
