A heads up for all at America Lane. Amongst the usual crop of weeds that have been so abundant in the wet second half of the summer there is a particularly nasty intruder. I've found two plants on my plot and I know that Gareth on the other side of the path and further down has also got some, so please be careful. This is Deadly Nightshade
It is poisonous and quite harmful, especially to young children who may think its white flowers make a pretty posy. If you find it when clearing your plots for the winter don't take any chances on composting it or letting the wind carry its seeds to another plot, but wrap it in a bag and take it off site to be disposed of.

Yes I found some too on plot 15. I was concerned as my granddaughter often visits with me.

Another weed to watch and one that is on the "invasive weeds" list, Himalayan Balsam. - www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=480 I found one plant at the back of my plot (15 on America Lane site) and a few more at the back of my neighbours plot. I pulled both weeds up, but in doing so the seeds exploded madly! This is the problem with this plant - it spreads by exploding seeds that spread far and wide!, So, not much I can do this year - but if you find this plant growing on your plot, or on the riverbank next spring- pull it up and destroy BEFORE IT SETS SEED! Town Council - probably one to watch out for when you are doing your maintenance visits. Thank you.

Himalayan Balsam was featured by Monty Don on Gardener's World a couple of weeks ago and is a massive problem. See below link, report starts at 19.59

The town council are aware of the problem and do periodical inspections for it. they were down on the site about a fortnight ago spraying the patch at the top of the site but i agree with you jane the Himalayan Balsam needs to be tackled before it matures and spreads its seeds all over the place. That is the only way it can be eradicated from the site. In my view its a bigger menace than knotweed because of its ability to seed so easily. Its up to us plotholders to eradicate the problem with a bit of vigilance and a spade
