ANOTHER GARDENING BOOK I STILL REFER TO IS THE AMATEUR GARDENER BY A.G.L HELLYER. I HAVE TWO COPIES OF THIS ,ONE FOR THE BOOKCASE AND A VERY WELL THUMBED VOLUME FOR MY SHED. ARTHUR HELLYER WAS A LOCAL AUTHOR (HE LIVED AT ROWFANT) AND FOR MANY YEARS WAS EDITOR OF THE AMATEUR GARDENING MAGAZINE IN ITS HEYDAY. I THINK A LOT OF THE OLDER GARDENERS IN THE AREA WOULD BE WELL ACQUAINTED WITH HIM AND NO DOUBT WILL HAVE A COPY OF HIS WORK. HE WAS A LOVELY MAN AND WAS ALWAYS READY TO HELP AND GIVE ADVICE WHEN ASKED FOR IT AND WASNT TO PROUD TO SEEK OUT AND ASK FOR ADVICE FROM OTHER GARDENERS HIMSELF. HE WOULD OFTEN BE SEEN ON ALLOTMENT SITES IN THE CRAWLEY DOWN, TURNERS HILL AND COPTHORNE AREA AND ALSO IN THE GARDENS OF SOME OF THE BIGGER HOUSES IN THE AREA DISCUSSING ASPECTS OF THE GARDENING WORLD WITH THE GARDENERS WHO WORKED IN THEM. IN FACT, MOST OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS IN HIS BOOKS WERE TAKEN IN HIS OWN GARDEN OR THE LOCAL GARDENS AND ALLOTMENTS IN THE AREA. SO WHEN YOU GET ADVICE FROM ONE OF HIS BOOKS YOU GET IT FROM A LOCAL PERSPECTIVE AND ALSO FROM THE LOCAL GARDENERS OF THAT TIME WHO KNEW ALL ABOUT THE GROWING AND SOIL CONDITIONS OF THIS AREA. I MYSELF DID GET A LOT OF GOOD ADVICE OFF OF HIM AND I WONDER IF ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING HIM.

I've not come across A G L Hellyer before so thanks for the recommendation. He has a small write up on Wikipedia. It says he wrote over a 100 books. Looks like one or two are available on Amazon second hand. I'll certainly take a look at those once I've read my ABC.
I've got a bit of a soft spot for the old country estate kitchen gardens. A while back I came across a BBC series from the 80's called The Victorian Kitchen Garden with Harry Dodson, one of the last of the old school head gardens working the gardens for big estates. He started his career at Stansted Park in Sussex. Perhaps you remember the series and I wonder what you thought of it? I'd recommend it to anyone who likes kitchen gardening and has an interest in the old techniques. If you stick Victorian Kitchen Garden in Youtube you get the whole series. There is also a book that went with the series that I got off Amazon for 1p! The author is Jennifer Davies.

Stretching or varying this thread a little, I found this old film clip on the National Allotment Society's Facebook site. Not sure if that link will paste, but here is the same film on a YouTube site. It has a lot of resonance for us allotment holders still, although the priorities have changed!
