when it was thought that this site was under threat the late paddy henry gave this advice. "the best way to stop any council from selling a site for building is to be extra vigilant in the way your site looks". does our site look very good from the road? i leave you to answer that one. now while we are assured that the one thing that the town council can overrule the mid sussex council on is on the matter of allotments but that clause is very limited when it comes to actual practice. we should be alarmed that the piece of land behind the site has been , i am led to believe, purchased by mid sussex council and in todays world where devolpers rule if it came to an appeal once again i leave it to you to answer yourself, which way the appeal would go. over the years mid sussex council have had a terrible record in defending allotment sites. here are the ones i know about. shipley bridge the village was in surrey but the allotments were in sussex sold off. copthorne no could build on there coffins had been carried through the site. now an estate felbridge could not build on it the family when giving the land for allotments had said it was only to be used for allotments now part of a larger estate. the list goes on and on ashurst wood forest row balcombe pound hill and many more. the inspectors and plot holders alike must be extra vigilant and keep our site in top condition. or we wont have a site at all.

had a rather terse conversation with a certain councillor in which it was pointed out that some of these sites was lost when the mid sussex council was called cuckfield rural district council. thank you councillor for pointing that out to me if that has upset anybody on the present council then i apologize. but the same principal applies. any councillor not in this voting area will vote for what what is best for his area, and rightly so, and if they can vote to shift a few more housing estates out of their area into somebody elses area they will. people vote them in to work for their district not other peoples. so you could have our present mid sussex members working tirelessly to save our site but they are few and the rest are many. so it is up to us,some tenants must be a lot more keener than they are now about the way they keep their plots and the inspection team must be more alert and act more quickly when a plot starts to begin to look untidy. the sympathy should be with the tenants around the bad plot not the tenant causing it. if what i say upsets anybody it is not meant to.

As there does seem quite a lot of councillors that are with us in keeping the site of america lane allotments away from hands of the likes of crest nickolson by keeping the site clean and tidy how about supplying the site with a skip every other year starting with this year.

COMING INTO THE SITE EVERY MORNING I CANNOT RECALL IN ALL THE TIME I HAVE HERE THE VIEW FROM THE ROAD EVER LOOKING SO BAD AS IT DOES NOW. APART FROM THAT IT JUST IS NOT FAIR ON THE TENANTS OF THE SURROUNDING PLOTS TO HAVE TO PUT UP WITH ALL THE WEED SEEDS THAT IS BLOWING ONTO THEIR PLOTS.

I SEE THAT TWO OF THE PLOTS THAT WERE IN A BAD STATE HAVE BEEN ROTOVATED 4B WHICH WAS THE SUBJECT OF A COMPLAINT AT THE PLOTHOLDERS MEETING AND ONE OF THE PIECES THAT WAS CHARLIE BRISTOWS OLD PLOT. BUT THE ONE THAT WAS JOHN AND SUE CULLENS IMMACULATE PLOT IS STILL IN A DISGRACEFUL STATE. WHY? WHY IS EVERYBODY SO SLOW TO ACT ON THE MATTER. WHY DO OTHER PEOPLE WHO KEEP THEIR PLOTS IN GOOD SHAPE HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS WEED STREWN PLOT. IT JUST ISNT FAIR. I KNOW ANOTHER PLOT HOLDER CAME UP WITH A GOOD IDEA IN JANUARY IN WHICH HE SUGGESTED THAT AS PLOT HOLDERS WE SHOULD ALL CONTACT OUT WARD TOWN COUNCILLORS AND LOCAL MID SUSSEX COUNCILLORS AND ASK EACH ONE WHERE THEIR LOYALTIES WERE. WERE THEY FOR AN ALLOTMENT SITE OR WERE THEY FOR A HOUSING ESTATE. I UNDERSTAND HE EVEN COMPOSED A STANDARD LETTER FOR PEOPLE TO COPY AND SEND TO THEIR COUNCILLOR. AM I BEING ALARMIST ? I DONT THINK SO NOT WHEN YOU CONSIDER THAT THIS ALLOTMENT SITE STANDS IN THE MIDDLE OF A PIECE OF GROUND THAT STRETCHES FROM OPPOSITE THE HOSPITAL RIGHT THROUGH TO LINDFIELD COMMON. NOT EXACTLY A SMALL BIT AND BIG ENOUGH TO ATTRACT SOME OF THE BIG BOYS.

Having to pass the allotment site on quite regular occasions I think wilbara Has a point when he says that what the site looks like from the outside is Very important. The site does not look the best from the road. I also see what Murray put in his piece about the community garden, as a newcomer to this forum could I hope no one would think I am going above Myself but would it not be a better idea if labour was foregone on the community garden and the labour utilised in cleaning the front of the site up.

Hi peter and welcome to the forum.
I think there are separate issues at stake here. The allocation and upkeep of sites is determined by the HH Town Council, with the tenant inspectors working alongside to give advice and make recommendations. There has been a change of tenancy on one side of the America Lane frontage to the site this year and new tenants will be subject to inspection, and given the offer of guidance and support. Perhaps the last few very hot weeks haven't shown any of our efforts to best advantage but we work together to make sure that long term the site is sustainable.
The Community Garden is not a Council initiative, other than in giving us the land rent-free. All tenants of America Lane allotments are welcome to contribute to the development of a garden that they and their families can use and enjoy. There is no commitment in the tenancy agreement to support this and those who work on it do so entirely by their own free will.

But surely here is a chance to forgo boundaries and for the two sides To work as one. with the council workforce obviously very stretched at the moment would Not a gesture from allotment holders work wonders for future relations

while the grass at the front has been cut it is very noticeable that the first plot is still in a terrible mess. the people who have taken over the second plot have put a lot of hard work into the their plot why should they have to put up with all the weed seeds blowing from the first plot onto theirs? it makes the whole area look a mess
