Hello! My name is Helen and I have today taken on plot 14B. Me and my family are looking forward to become a part of the America Lane allotment. As we are complete beginners, tips and advise are more than welcome! Have been reading all the info on here about allotments ideas, tips and what rules there are.
I have a plan in my head of what I want to do but are starting small and simple, potatoes etc. I read in one of the treads about the Clubroot affecting some of the plots, does anyone have a idea if my plot is affected?
Look forward to meeting you all soon!!
Helen

It was good to meet you on site this morning and I hope you and your family are going to have a really enjoyable, rewarding time on your new plot. Once you start developing your ideas about what to plant - and I very much agree start small and take baby steps - I suggest you put it down on paper or on computer so that you know what you have planted and where it is. That is important for things like potatoes and legumes, where you will need to do some simple crop rotation from year to year to prevent one patch of soil from becoming exhausted, and another too highly nitrogenised.

NO PROBLEM WITH CLUB ROOT. WAS ONE OF THE BEST ON THE SITE WHEN A RAY HOLMAN HAD IT. NOT SO LONG AGO AND BEFORE HIM THE IMMORTAL JOHN PAYNE. ITS ONLY IN LATTER YEARS THAT IT HAS IN THE STATE IT IS NOW BOTH RAY HOLMAN AND JOHN PAYNE KEPT IT IN REALLY GOOD NICK AND SPENT A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY IN KEEPING IT IN TOP CONDITION. HAPPY GARDENING

PS.BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE IS WHAT I WAS GIVEN. WALK ROUND THE SITE EVERY NOW AND AGAIN AND SEE WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING YOU WILL SOON SEE WHICH ONES ARE BEING TENDED BY PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND COPY THEM. DONT BE FRIGHTENED OF TAKING ADVICE AND DONT BE FRIGHTENED OF REJECTING IT. BUT MOST OF ALL ENJOY IT AND DONT GET DOWNHEARTED WHEN THINGS GO WRONG WE ALL HAVE FAILURES AND NEARLY EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING THEY CANT GROW. NO MATTER HOW LONG THEY HAVE BEEN ALLOTMENTING. ONCE AGAIN , HAPPY GARDENING

Thank you for the warm welcome! It was nice to meet some of you down there today. One of the best you say... No pressure now then? I had a walk around today but are coming down this weekend to have a closer look around and measure and hope to chat to more people. Hope to see you all soon!

Hi Helen, hello and welcome to the allotments. If you have read the post already then I won't repeat what I wrote already. Just to say, and I know I am going to start sounding desperate now and I have posted a few times about this, but if you need any Rhubarb help yourself to the roots that are sitting on the front of my plot 5. If you dont have any already and would like some. They need planting now as they are regrowing. I'll be chucking them out soon.
Cheers
Stuart.
