We seem to be having a rash of spam postings using Asian text, possibly Vietnamese. From illustrations on some of them I think they are promoting gambling sites.
I've seen evidence that the spammers have targeted other relatively small Proboards sites and there doesn't appear to be much that can be done if they have the software to register as members and then post. The action I have taken is to remove the posts completely from view and to ban the specific account resposible for the posting. It's a nuisance but I look at the board every day and I will continue to do so. In the meantime if you see a new post in a non-English alphabet my advice is not to click on it and certainly not to click on any links within the post.

Hi to all
I'm sorry but we are still receiving "memberships" that exist purely to promote spam adverts. It's a well-known phenomenon that currently these originate in Vietnam. To avoid annoyance and possible interference with your own safety when viewing these posts I have had to introduce the following changes:
First, Guests may not view the board without logging in. The following message will be displayed if anyone not logged in clicks on a thread -"We regret that because of a high level of spam postings we must now restrict access to members only. If you would like to join the board please apply to become a member. If you are a member already, please log in to see the latest threads."
And secondly, new members now will not be allowed to join automatically. Instead this is the message that they will see on application - "Welcome to the Forum. We regret that because of the high level of spam received each new membership must be approved by the Moderators. We will do everything possible to make this a swift and painless procedure for genuine allotments enthusiasts."
I and other Moderators will do everything possible to view new applications and approve/decline as quickly as we see them. In practice this should deter the spammers completely and only genuine allotments fans will apply for membership and will of course be approved.
I'm sorry to have to do this and of course will review if things change.

Thanks to all for putting up with the inconvenience. We believe we have a remedy to the problem of entry and posting by malicious scammers and from now on this Forum wuill be accessible for browsing without requiring login. However we will retain the requirement for new members to register for approval, and that only members may post on the boards.
