The SouthEast Water Temporary User Ban comes into force on 12th August. There is a very good FAQ here which covers most questions.
One point not covered was on using a hosepipe to fill up a waterbutt, based on the logic that if it is permissible to allow many watering cans to be filled from the mains, then why not allow a waterbutt to be filled directly, saving those numerous visits from plot to tap?. The Town Council have queried this on behalf of plotholders but the advice they've received is that you are not permitted to fill a water butt using a hosepipe. You can use a hosepipe from the water butt if the butt has been filled by rainwater, but it cannot be filled from mains water.
The advice may be subject to change so keep checking the website and we will work with the Town Council to keep you updated. We know that the National Society for Allotment Gardeneres has succeeded in gaining an exemption for allotment users in Hampshire from Southern Water so ler's hope they can do the same for Sussex.
