Just went down the plot and found some severed swede tops next to my swede bed. Can't be the work of an animal I think as they look to have been cut off with a blade. Which suggests some swedes have been picked and the tops chopped off. I am pretty sure it wasn't me as I always twists my swede tops off by hand and then put them on the compost heap. Anyone able to solve this mystery?

That is disturbing. I hadn't been down to the site since last Monday until yesterday morning, and Gareth told me that there had been another break-in, taking equipment from his shed, probably on Thursday or Friday. It could be coincidence but I gather the thieves were selective about what tools they took and perhaps they know enough about gardening to help themselves to what appears from the tops to be very nicely-formed swedes.

Yes I am rather proud of my swede this year. Not sure what you can do though to stop it. It is impossible to secure the site from anyone determined to break in. The biggest deterrent I am told is CCTV. I doubt our budget stretches to that.

Several people have told me that cameras are the only real deterrent these days. I can't help wondering though that they might just nick the camera instead of the vegetables .

reported the break in to the police. got the usual couldnt care approach one gets from them when there is anything to do with allotments. They pointed out that they were understaffed and that they had to priotyise their resouces. I pointed out that they were not short staffed when it came to protecting the rich and powerfuls interest at the local Fracking riots last year. Answer was there none

I think it was worth it though. They will have to keep a record of it. If you didn't then it would be as if it had never happened. At least this way no one can say we dont have a problem.
