whilst watching a gardening programme on one of the outer channels i was struck by the way he was going about his programme compared to what we are fed by the so called experts on the main channels. here was a man who obviously had learnt his trade by actually bending his back, getting his hands dirty, making mistakes and learning by them. in this media led world we live in today,so many of the so called experts that flit across our screen have achieved their position as presenters, not by years of hard graft in the wind and the rain but sitting in front of a computor and getting letters after their name. does it matter ? well, yes it does. as a society people have come to take for granted what these people say as the gospel truth and the knowledge that has been passed down for generations by real gardening people is going to be lost for good. even people like monty don now come on our screens and say "this is what you do" not "this is the way i do it but there are other ways as good if not better" the days of Percy Thrower, Fred Loads and Fred Streeter, who had years of gardening experience and hard graft behind behind them, before they graced our television screens are long gone. what is the answer give these so called experts a miss and do what i do, wander up to oatall or vale road and get proper allotment advice from proper allotment people. you will find it is far better and dont forget that advice comes from long years of experience.
