Starting a new thread now that Spring is finally here - and overcompensating for its late arrival - to highlight some of the plans and activities taking place in the Garden this summer.
Planting
John King has kindly offered to plant the entire front bed, either side of the existing rose-arch, with additional arches and golden roses. It's a very generous gidft to the garen and should look magnificent for years to come. Thanks John.
I will be raking over the central circular bed and planting with a ring of Flanders poppy seeds as part of our project to make 2018 a year of remembrance marking the centenary of the end of the First World War. I'm open to any suggestions on plantings to succeed the poppies in late summer/autumn. Please get in touch with me.
Maintenance
Stuart Southwell and Andrew Lawes have both volunteered to do regular weeding, mowing and strimming, but we're always open to offers of extra help. Just let us know when you are available and what you can do - nobody gets turned away!
We'll be reviewing the fruit tree planting and cdutting back, shaping and in some cases replacing failed plantings.
Structures
Andrew will shortly be laying the stone slabs donated by Pat Costello to create an area for setting up our barbecue and tables for our social activities.
Waiting to hear your feedback on the kind of structure you want to see on the hard standing at the stream end: an arbour or a shelter? We would like to get started on this soon so that we can plant around it so please let us know what you want to see in our Garden.
Social Events
Three dates are planned for this year. All plotholders and their families are most welcome. Please come along if you can , joiun in, meet all your neighbours and have a good time:
Spring seed and seedling swap next Sunday 29th April, from 10 - 12. Don't worry if you're new on the plot or late with your own plantings and don't have anything to swap. We've all been in the same boat at one time or another and there will be plenty of spare plants available to give you a start.
Summer barbecue on Sunday 1st July
Winter Festival Sunday 21st October
