It's getting to be a regular feature, but once again huge thanks to Patrick Costello for his time, effort and great skill in providing the Garden with an archway to complement the Arbour. This replaces the former metal arch which had sadly succumbed to the weather. The climbing roses are looking very healthy and we can now train them up the sides of the arch.
Elsewhere in the garden the new planting of spring flower bulbs made last autumn, especially at the unseasonably hot "Winter Festival", are staring to show and should be at their best over the next month. Thanks here to all those who took part and donated bulbs.
And a date for your diaries: Sunday 12th May we will be holding our Spring event in the Garden, open to all plotholders, family and friends. This year we will open up the theme from just a seed/seedling swap to a Plant and Produce event. As before, bring surplus seedlings along and look to find something different to grow from the plants donated by your neighbours, but also we invite all those who've made jams, preserves, chutneys, pickles etc from crops grown on the site or at home to bring along what you can spare. In return , cash donations will go towards further plants and equipment for the Community Garden.
More details of this event and others will be available soon on this Forum, on the Noticeboard on the site and on Facebook, and if you have any suggestions for this or other events please come and talk to me, Andrew Lawes or Jane Hack.
Happy sowing and growing.

It's been a joy to spend time in the allotment this weekend with the warm sun helping to bring on so many plants. And in the Community Garden there has been a riot of bloom from the fruit tree blossoms to some of the amazing tulips planted last autumn. If anyone can recognise the two varieties shown in the pictures below please comment.
Over the weekend we've been weeding, watering and cutting the grass in the garden. There's still more weeding to be done to get it in best condition for the Plant and Produce day on Sunday, 12th May, so if anyone has a little time available we'd be very grateful for the help.

Many thanks to the person or persons who weeded the front beds of the Garden and watered the centre bed. Thanks too to Gareth who planted the day lilies in the right hand rear bed. All the fruit looks in excellent condition in this damp and fertile spring and early summer. I've been weeding today at the rear of the garden and hope that we can get it completely cleared before the Sussex in Bloom visit, and in perfect shape for the BBQ.

South and South East in Bloom judges accompanied by the Mayor visited the allotments site today and paid special attention to the Community Garden. They asked me to pass on to all allotment holders how well worked the site looks and they had much praise for the Community Garden. If there is any other feedback I will let everyone know.

New on the plot from today, these two big Dalek composters given to us by a work colleague - many thanks to Debbie.
On the left, for bindweed only, which Andrew may be able to alchemise into some growable goo at a later stage. I will find labels for them.
And on the right of the plot, for general composting of leaves, rotting fruit etc.

Early autumn and yesterday was a glorious sunny day. Looking forward to our Autumn Festival on 20th October when we will invite all plotholders to come and help out weeding the garden, planting their own bulbs for next spring, and sharing refreshments with us - and perhaps a few decorated pumpkins will also be on hand.
Meanwhile here are some of the current sights in this lovely place.
