Almost autumn now and most of us are clearing our plots either covering or planting a few winter vegetables. It has been an extraordinary year in every way from the heavy rains of the first three months of the year to the long dry spring of the lockdown and temperatures around 30 for a few glorious late September days. Crop yields have generally been very good, sometimes arriving early because of the heat and the worst of the problems most people have faced has been through inconsistent watering.
For the benefit of new plotholders in this last year there would normally have been meetings in April/May and around now arranged by the Town Council and chaired by Cllr Jeffers of the Environment and General Purposes Committee where we could get together with tenants of the other allotment sites, compare notes, discuss common problems, and disclose special issues on each site that needed attention so that the Council could make a decision on what action to take , especially where budgetary expense was involved. Obviously those meetings cannot take place this year because of the need for social distancing but there are some issues that have surfaced during the year and I've spoken to several other plotholders.
Therefore I have been in touch with the Town Council to set up a meeting where I will present the America Lane case for action on the items listed below, and if necessary attend (by Zoom) the relevant committee meetings to argue for funds or further research. If you are happy with that and have any more information on these or other issues please let me know as soon as possible and I will carry forward on your behalf and report back to you on the outcomes.
Here are the head topics I'm aware of --
Stream and ditch: danger of flooding and measures taken
Plots on stream side: banks altered by winter 2019/20 floods
Plots on stream side: overhanging trees from the opposite bank or gardens
Plots on ditch side: glass and detritus thrown up during maintenance
Plots taken over from elderly and infirm former tenants: getting rid of rubbish
Security of plots: update on W. Sussex CC action on conduit access
Car Parking: problems reported
